Holiday pay and termination adjustments

Back pay calculations from the recent collective agreements have now been completed, and there are additional holiday pay and termination adjustments to be paid to some of these staff. These payments are a charge to your school's operational funding and will be made in pay period 07 (pay day June 30). The agreements are:

Support Staff in Schools' Collective Agreement
Effective 13 December 2019 to 6 February 2022

School Caretakers', Cleaners' and Canteen Staff Collective Agreement
Effective 11 December 2019 to 11 February 2022

Kaiarahi i te Reo, Therapists', ATSSD, Special Education Assistants' Collective Agreement
Effective 13 December 2019 to 6 February 2022

Adult and Community Education Staff in Schools' Collective Agreement
Effective 28 January 2020 to 27 January 2022

July collective agreement increases

The 2019 collective agreement rate increase for teachers (effective from 1 July), will be applied from pay period 08 (pay day 15 July).

Maximum step increases for teachers

The new maximum steps for teachers who have been on their existing step for at least 12 months as at 1 July 2020, will come into effect in pay period 08 (15 July) automatically. These teachers increase one step and no attestation is required. This applies to teachers on the 2019 collective agreement and those who have signed the 2019 individual employment agreement by 1 July 2020.

New maximum steps

From 1 July the maximum steps are increased for trained teachers.

  • For Grades 1, 2 and 3 the maximum step will be step 10.

  • For Grade 3+, Grade 4 and Grade 5 the new maximum step will be step 11.

The day-to-day relief maximum step is unchanged.

Collective agreement for ground staff

The 2019 secondary and area school ground staff collective agreement will be implemented in Pay Period 08 (15 July). Staff on the collective agreement will be automatically rolled onto this agreement at the new rates. They will also receive back pay to 11 December 2019, and schools have already received funding for this increase in their March operational funding.

Pay equity for teacher aides

We've been receiving many questions from you about the recent announcement of pay equity for teachers aides. We don't yet have full details, but will share with you as soon as we do. We understand the Ministry and NZSTA are developing guidance and tools for schools about the settlement agreement and how it will be implemented if accepted by NZEI Te Riu Roa members. In the meantime, keep an eye on the Ministry of Education's website here. On its website the Ministry says that schools will receive the additional funds by October 2020 to allow teachers aides to receive the new pay rates no later than November 2020, backdated to 12 February 2020.

New government superannuation fund rate

The government superannuation fund's employer subsidy rate will automatically increase from 14.4% to 14.9% effective from the first pay period after 1 July 2020 (pay period 08 - payday 15 July). The employee/member contribution rate remains unchanged at 6.5%.
