Holiday pay reduction (HPR) for some teachers

If a teacher takes unpaid leave during a school term, a holiday pay reduction may be needed.

At the beginning of each term break, holiday pay reductions are calculated for all teachers who have taken unpaid leave during the term just ended.

In some instances, further holiday pay reductions are required resulting from prior employment agreement terms. The holiday pay reduction will be made from the employee's pay that falls over that term break.

School sectors have different holiday pay reduction calculation rules, see the collective agreements for more information.

Long-term leave without pay for teachers and holiday pay

Teachers who go on long-term leave without pay, will be paid their holiday pay due, at the beginning of their leave period.

If they return to work earlier than planned, this is likely to cause an overpayment, because the leave paid is specific to the original leave booking dates. If this is the case, the teacher will be sent a letter explaining the details of the overpayment along with repayment options.

If a teacher on long-term leave without pay returns earlier than originally booked, complete an EP12r Leave booking reversal form to cancel the original booking. The EP12r also has a section to resubmit the leave with correct dates.

Submit the forms to Education Payroll as soon as you can to ensure the teacher is automatically paid on their early return.

If you have a teacher booking long-term leave without pay up to the end of term 4, their leave end date must be entered as 27 January (the last day of the school year). If another leave date is entered, this is likely to cause an overpayment, because the leave paid out is calculated up to and including 27 January.
